Hello: I was sure glad to run into this site while searching the net for information. I just bought an old barrel shaped stein at an antique (mostly junk) shop in the Czech Republic which appears to be fairly ancient and I wondered if anyone could offer some information about it. The stein is made of wood (oak and maple?) with reed type material (3 reeds near the top and 4 near the bottom) that strap around the barrel. The hing for the lid has a thin metal pin. 12 wide (about 7/8ths of an inch) barrel staves alternate with 11 sets of 2 to 3 thin (about 1/8th inch)strips of lighter and darker wood. The thin strips alternate with dark and light wood giving the piece a rather pin stripped appearance. The lid looks like oak and I assume the dark wide staves are oak as well. Pitch once coated the inside of the vessel but it is cracked and mostly gone. The stein is 8 inches tall and 7 inches wide including the handle. The brim measures 3 1/2 inches and the base measures 3 and 3/4ths inches. The barrell is about 5 inches at the maximum width. The handles is just under 6 inches in length. I would gladly email a picture to anyone. It is really a beautiful piece that is a bit crusty but complete and in decent condition. It has about 50% of what appears to be the original finish left on the outside. THANKS SO MUCH!!
