I recently acquired what I believe to be an early Merkelbach and Wick salt glazed etched stein of stylised mermaids flanking an oval containing a German saying. Numbered 183 but no stylised MGW mark on bottom. After cleaning, I found scratched on the outer part of the pewter lid the following-" DAMEN PREIS F. NEUDOLT STROKMAN U. CREW 26 JUNE 1881" . Literal translation is "LADY PRICE F. NEUDOLT STOKMAN AND CREW 26 JUNE 1881" The inscription is faint and scratched in freehand in capital letters with sharp object- possibly map compass point. Any thoughts from any one on the meaning of this inscription? Perhaps from the crew of a personal yacht or sailing ship of some type, assuming the inscription is genuine. Any help would be appreciated. James.
