Janet, There is an article in the library of this site entitled: ~ Your Stein: Old or New? ~ This is part of what it says about pewter: " Pewter darkens with age and exposure to the air. The inside of the lid, which is not exposed, will remain shiny and bright...... Some new lids on reproductions have been dipped in a darkening chemical to make them look old, but the interior of the lid will be darkened as well, giving away their true age" --John.
