I think that part of the answer probably is that since there were so few men in these units, it wasn't worth while for the stein producers to develop the large, colorful designs that were used on most reservist steins. I would also wonder if the men in these units were all inexperienced recruits or if some had had some prior experience in telegraphy, possibly attending the Imperial telegraphy school.
