Thanks for your replies. I guess I will have to live with conjecture on this one. Mine was that these were ex-students who had belonged to a student association or were enamored with the student association steins. The lower membership in these battalions may also have contributed to more individuality. I might as well add my speculation to Dan’s comment about naval steins. Perhaps they were more ornate because a sailor had less chance to spend his pay while at sea and had more money saved at the end of his enlistment to spend on a stein.
