My 104 year old Mettlach stein is in excellent condition (I have been told that at an appraisal event). The Mettlach Stein factory's Museum wrote me the following information: "This type of stein with production number 1256 belonged to the production program around 1885 till the World War I. This one is dated by the little imprinted digit 02 =1902. The material is stoneware with reliefed and by hand applied motives, based on designs made by Ludwig Foltz (Munich architect) and working for the company in the first half of the 19th century." On the bottom of the stein there is a symbol which includes a face with a winged helmet, and "Villeroy and Boch", "Mettlach". It is stamped: 1256 4 V 02 . The stein is brown, cream, gray, and white stoneware on the outside and white enamel on the inside. The rim of the lid and the lid opener are pewter. There are three crests with ribbons, saying "Drinken", "Lieben", and "Singen", with pictures of kissing birds, grapevines around a pillar, and a lyre. There is a Star of David on the top of the lid, with grapes in the center of the star, and grape leaves all around. There is a second Star of David on the side of the stein, behind the handle, with grapes in the center. Grape vines are around the pictures and on the handle. There is a radish, or something like it on the lid opener, with a flower, and there are grapes on the back of the handle made for the thumb to open the lid. Do you have any information about this stein? I would appreciate anything you could tell me about the history and value of this beautiful piece. I will have photos ASAP. Thanks, Naomi
