This was sent moments ago to some friends of mine. Thought it might be approriate here. Hope no one minds. ( It is reprinted in it's entirety. ) I couldn't let this pass. Around five years ago, I purchased a stein on eBay for the princely sum of $80.00. ( I went a bit higher than that, but $80 was the winning bid. ) It was a half liter pot, with what appeared to be a transfer print concerning Germans in China. It had a figural Budda on the lid, but after examining it for awhile, I came to the conclusion that it was probably a contemporary stein and therefore of modest value. In other words, even at 80 bucks I overpaid. It went into storage with my other "mistakes" in one of several plastic milk cartons. Skip to Andre Amelounx's - a guy who's parents once owned a German restaurant right on Genesee St. here in Waukegan - recent auction at the SCI ( Stein Collectors International ) mini-convention in St. Louis, Sept. 30. There was a stein identical to mine, for which Andre had the audacity to ask $500-700. I figured it would never sell, but kept my eye on it anyway. Cut to the chase. The latest catalog came yesterday and the results are in; final selling price, $1,035.00. HAH!!! That ought to make up for a lot of stupid purchases in my early days as a stein collector! ( Needless to say, it has been removed ~ very carefully ~ from the milk carton. ) Ludwig Von Drake, Big Time Collector & Investment Wizard. ( HEE! )
