I have a very large (7 liter) Mettlach etched porcelain stein depicting a scene from "Lohengrin". The base bears the Mettlach emblem, the number 2455, Made in Germany and Reg. US Pat. Off. The number 70 is hand lettered in gold on the base in German script. It has a domed lid crowned by the figure of a Teutonic warrior in armor. It was given to a family member by Charlie Birger, a notorious outlaw in Southern Illinois, who was hanged for murder in 1928 (?). Can anyone give me any information on this piece. I am not a collector. The rest of my steins are purely decorator pieces, but I am most interested in the Mettlach piece.
