Craig, At the turn of the 19th century, the ceramic inserts were used to cut costs. Thus, there would only be a pewter rim, leaving the underside of the insert exposed. I have never seen the insert before. It may not belong to a stein manufacturer. The initials are interesting, maybe that of some famous soldier. Maybe the van is von. Or perhaps the artist. I see Chris found the mark for you, but it doesn't help authenicate the ownership. It would have been interesting to know what stein it was attached to. If it were a Reinhard Merkelbach, I doubt it had the six-pointed star mark. Can you tell what material was attached to the pewter that attached to the handle? Was it ceramic, stoneware or glass? I don't know what steins RM would have that could be a mate for the lid insert. Ron
