Hi Cindy, are you talking about the 1L mark? If so it is a capacity mark. It shows where the 1 litre measure would be for someone filling up the stein. The stein you are talking about sounds like a Munich Child character stein by Reinemann. I have one on my blog under April 2011. Is it what your stein looks like?
