I know it seems contradictory to the observations you have made, but it seems highly unlikely to me that these fingerprints were left intentionally, or if they were, it was done surreptitiously. The painter/decorators played a minor role in the production of a stein, and the company management would not have condoned this practice. Also, it seems to have no point, since an individual would not be personally identifiable from a fingerprint, it's not like Kilroy leaving his message that "Kilroy was here."
