I recently purchased a 0.5 liter, pottery relief stein. There was no manufacturer’s mark, but there was a mold number - “964.” - located on the side of the stein near the base of the handle. Yesterday, while talking with fellow collector Michael K., I discovered he had the same stein. A closer examination showed some differences which included: the frieze band along the base; the capacity marks were both very lightly stamped and different styles – mine was “0.5L” and Michael’s was “1/2L”; the lids and thumblifts; and most importantly, Michael’s has a stein mark that looks like a triangle with a vase in it (similar to Gerz by clearly different, at least from the Gerz marks I’m familiar with). I’ve checked several sources and cannot find this stein mark. A check of Chris’ “Stein Marks” site shows a very similar one as an unidentified mark – Image L17. The main difference between the mark at Image L17 and Michael’s is the vase contained within the triangle is positioned differently. Images of both steins can be seen at https://picasaweb.google.com/117786072145425112413/Mold964. (The photographs of my stein are identified with “WS” while Michael’s are identified with “MK”.) Is anyone familiar with the mark on Michael’s stein? Is the mold # location and style “964.” - with a period following the number - a format that has been seen on other steins? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks - Walter
