Ken, That is a BIG question with many variations in terms of answers. Hallmarks on the outside are usually reproductions...usually. I have seen a few legit examples that dated to early 1800's marked in this fashion. The hinge design can be a giveaway (square or "block-like" hinges are always fakes) and colors are helpful. Originals are surprisingly light in weight; repro's are heavy with massive pewter. Clay and pewter were expensive and used as needed in originals. View old catalogs and ebay items to get a feel.
