I would appreciate any information that SCI members could share about a Villeroy & Boch Stein that has been in the possession of our family for for at least 70 years. What appears to be an ink stamp of Villeroy & Boch is on the bottom. The words Villeroy & Boch are horizontal in a rectangular box. under this is a upward facing semi cirular area for text that has the word Mettlach. The stamp is still very readable and part of the stamp appears to be over a very clear impression of a four digit number. That number is 2942. Above the horizontal text area that says Villeroy & Boch is a bird, that appears to be an eagle, centered over the horizontal words. Another impression appears under one of the wings, which is the Roman Numberal II. About 1.5 cm to the left of the II is the number 2 (impression that is slightly lower than the II). To the right of the II and slightly lower is this impression 05. The stein has no chips and has a lid, with pewter ring and pewter connection to the handle. The lid opens and closes easily. The top of the lid is an ivory colored circular relief with four sets of double flowers/plants or perhaps a type of berry on short stems. The relief rests on a porcelain circular plate that is set lower than the pewter ring. The inside of the lid is pure and bright white porcelain. The inside of the stein is pure and bright white porcelain. The outside of the stein is the same color as the porcelain plate and has three sections of relief. Starting at the handle, on the left and the right are duplicate reliefs of one six sided star. Inside the center of the star is a full fitting Roman numeral II, which has a figure before the II which I have never seen. It looks like two S one above the other with the bottom loop of the top S becoming the top loop of the lower S. The third relief is like a vine, with the same plants as on the lid. The vines and plants form a rectangular area that dips to look like a heart. The relief is ornate, just as on the lid. Some of the vines join at the bottom, as if to make a necklace or neckholding strap. There is a small relief ring that holds a relief medalion of the same type six sided star. But this star has a hollow center all the way through the relief to the base of the stein. There is text within the relief area that says, Braun ist Meine Maid, Schaumt uber jeder=. Zeit. Several letters have the double .. above them. S Dudley sedudley@aol.com
