I spoke to David Harr on this subject, and he explained that a lathe was used to bend the edge over the inlay after it was placed in the recess in the lid designed to accept it. In other words, the lid and inlay was held together and spun on a lathe and as it was spinning a piece of material such as wood was held against the raised lip and pressure applied to bend the lip down over the edge of the inlay to hold it in place. Once this was done, the edge was finished further using other tools to give the smooth finished look we see on these. Fascinating, isn't it?
