Jamie, I would like to see a photo of the stein and markings if possible. There is a Thewalt stein in the catalog on The Beer Stein Library with the German phrase "Gerstensaft giebt Manneskraft.” (Barley juice gives virility.) That is Thewalt 210, size not noted, showing a man sitting by a barrel, arm on the barrel and holding a musical instrument. A man is standing while making a toast. A barmaid is behind the barrel. This is a relief stein. The 05l on your stein is probably the size, 0,5 L or 1/2 liter if it is near the handle. The stein may be based on this original mold if the description matches that on your stein. The year would be 1894. While Thewalt was founded in 1893, it did not begin production until 1894. The manufacture date is circa 1970-1985. Your boyfriend got a good buy, but he probably won't see much more appreciation in the value unless there is a lot of inflation, which is quite possible with the government's spending policies. Ron
