Cindy, The V&B Mettlach factory was the only one I know of that dated their steins with a two-digit number for the year. I think the 5xxx number clearly indicates it was made in the modern era. I don't think we will ever know the meaning of the separate letters. When a letter follows the mold number, it indicates there are additional scenes for that mold. The manufacturers did not always apply their mark to the stein, especially if they were making it for a distributor. Porcelain and glass steins rarely have a maker's mark and it is rare to find a Mettlach without a mark. Ron
