We recently acquired this 2 1/2 liter stein, and while we've done a significant amount of research, we are having trouble clearly identifying the type of stein and its possible worth. Here's what we've been able to discern: It's a German stein, we think dating from the late 1800's. The relief on the front is from a German Opera popular at the time called "Der Trompeter von Saeckingen" ( http://www.trompeter-von-saeckingen.de/english/scheffel/oper.htm ) The phrase on the front says "Jung Werner beim Grafen" which we've translated to be something along the lines of "Young Werner meets the Count." We think it is a PUG stein, but are unsure. The only identifying markings are a "1199" stamped on the bottom, which we believe to be a model or mold number. As far as we've been able to find, there are no maker's marks or anything else to indicate origin. We suspect it to be a Mettlach stein, due to the fact that the inside of the stein is a pure white glaze. The lid appears to be the appropriate pewter, and while slightly damaged, is still attached. The porcelain appears to be in absolutely perfect condition, no chips of any kind. We've otherwise been unable to find anything even resembling our stein. Any information or help would be very much appreciated. Thank you! Photos: http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v231/Ebonycurse666/Stein/
