Kim, you’re partially right and partially wrong. Your stein is a relief stein (not PUG) made of pottery (not porcelain) by Reinhold Hanke in Germany in the late 1800s, the 1199 is the mold number. Werner is the hero (and trumpeter) of “The Trumpeter of Säckingen”, a long epic poem written in 1854 by Joseph Victor von Scheffel and turned into an opera in 1884 by Victor Nessler. This scene was painted in 1888 by Carl Schweninger, Jr. based on the poem, not the opera. Here Young Werner is meeting the Baron (not Count.) This scene and a number of others by Schweninger were used in steins by most of the major manufacturers (but not in Mettlach.) The Beer Stein Library values the stein at $150-225 in mint condition.
