The only thing that makes sense is that the reservist must have become more important in later life. Of the five bidders to make it to the $2,000 range, three only show bids for coins and money, excluding this one stein. Two of them, and one of the other two bidders, who do bid on steins, have scores of under 40. Like with Bayern, infantry steins from Hesse are common, and this regiment wasn't founded at the very end of the imperial period. I don't think I've ever seen an infantry stein go for this much. The reservist was probably not from a prominent family or he would have been in an elite unit. Even if the guy became a Nobel prize winner, I wouldn't see that making his stein that valuable. Maybe a pilot in WWI? You would have to be able to document that this was the right guy. Maybe someone can enlighten us.
