Considering the body and the lid separately, the body and its regimental decor is uncommon, but far from unknown. The lack of a roster on the body is not unusual. The lid is found on student steins, as it has a perfect relief decoration for student associations: the shield upon which a Zirkel is readily engraved, a helm atop the shield, and the mantling and Federbusch (feather plumes) which are used to display the associations colors, when presented in a printed or enameled (i.e., colored) format. Each type of stein - regimental and student - employ their own symbols of identity - the regiment number, shoulder boards, etc. for regimentals, the Zirkel and coat of arms for student steins. It is unusual for a single stein to proclaim identity to two entirely separate organizations, as would be the case if this lid were original. Further, since student steins were most often given as gifts between members of the association, they typically have a dedication, from one person to the other, and a date. The fact that this is missing from the lid of this stein raises the possibility that the dedication would be found on the original body to which the lid belonged. While anything is possible, I do not believe this lid and this body began their lives together. Finally, does the lid seem to be a little too large for this body?
