Tim, You should leave the lids as is with their natural patina. If there are any tears or dents in the lid, they can be repaired although that will never restore them to their mint value. It is OK to clean any dirt or grime off the body of the stein. They also need to be dusted from time to time, as my wife likes to remind me. They are not so valuable that couldn't drink out of them from time to time, but you might want to buy a newer one for those duties. May I suggest an official one liter Oktoberfest stein for your drinking pleasure? And don't forget to join SCI and start adding to your collection, after all two is the loneliest number in the world when it comes to steins sitting on your mantle. Prosit, Ron
