I am surprised no one has answered you by now. My guess is that if the staining is on top of the patina, it can be removed if you are careful. See the article "Caring for Your Steins" in the Reading Room of this site. If the stain is part of the patina, then the only way to remove it may be to polish the lid and remove the patina. You might try contacting David Harr from the site's Links page for information.
