William, I was able to see the "KB" signature on your stein and it is the typical signature of Kilian "Karl" Beuler. KB was born in Hoehr (now Hoehr-Grenzhausen) in 1865 and went to work for Girmscheid in 1890. While he worked there for about 25 years, he did freelance for other firms, notably Simon Peter Gerz, J W Remy, Albert Jacob Thewalt and Rosskopf & Gerz. TBSL needs to update their listing to show that 187 does have the KB initials on it. Many stein makers put the mold number under the handle as well as on the bottom of the stein. When there is no maker's mark, the mold number or the German text can be used to help search for the maker. A site like TBSL is valuable for this type of search. Handles, capacity marks and lids can also assist in determining the likely maker. That is why photos are essential when someone is seeking assistance in identifying their steins. Villory & Boch's Mettlach factory is the only maker that indicated the year of manufacture on their steins. All we can say as to the age of your stein is circa 1900 (which could be anywhere from 1890 to 1920). Ron
