Ken, Like many stein articles, this one lacks any references to support the statements. While numbers 35 to 39 go up in size from 4.75 inches, the next set of photos show number 40 is 4.5 inches tall. My White's Pottery book shows steins with lower numbers that clearly appear taller than number 35 or 40. So the number does not indicate size, although there may be a series of numbers in which size corresponds to the number. I am not sure that information is of any use since the scenes aren't related. T also found steins in my book that had the same number as in the article, but the scenes were different. Perhaps the number signifies a particular shape for the stein. Ron
