This is the correct body shape, decoration and - importantly - the correct pewter for this stein. How then can we explain the 5-digit number on the base? Suppose the piece is a fake. That would mean that someone reproduced not only the shape (the easy part), but the mottled glaze (braun geflammt), the enameled decoration and the hammered pewter fittings, but stopped short of using the correct 4-digit form number (2176) on the base. That's illogical. This is a well known and verifiable scene, and can only be explained as a factory mistake when the form number was added.
