Before we were so rudely interrupted, a gentleman had a question about the manufacturer of an etched stein, I believe form 6032, featuring a black boy playing a banjo on the front of the stein, an alligator handle and a insert lid top showing an orange or lemon. No picture was provided. Here is a St. Augustine stein with the described lid and an alligator handle, http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=717649801. The form number is 6049, the 60 and 49 being impressed into the bottom with separate dies. This stein features the crest of the city of St. Augustine, Florida. There is another St. Augustine stein, form 6044, which is attributed to Marzi and Remy in the auction catalogs (this is similar to Mettlach 2373 and can be seen in lot 279 in Gary Kirsner’s 09/05/01 auction, which can be accessed in the Links section). I have this stein, but it does not contain the Marzi and Remy mark. The ones I have seen also do not contain a mark. I am not sure whether the 6044 stein has been verified by a mark or a picture in a catalog. However, 6032 and 6049 have features similar to 6044 and the numbers are close in the 6000 series sequence. Therefore, they are probably of the same manufacturer. Similar souvenir steins were also made for New Orleans (see lot 385 in Gary Kirsner’s 03/11/02 auction).
Have you ever noticed how when you learn a new word it starts showing up in whatever you pick up to read? Well it seems to work with steins too. Here is another St. Augustine stein (form 1402), also with a black boy playing the banjo, the city coat-of-arms and the alligator handle (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?MfcISAPICommand=ViewItem&item=717818685). The tail of alligator handle, however, is going in the opposite direction of that on form 6044. I wasn’t looking for either of these St. Augustine steins; they just showed up on eBay while I was searching for steins.
St. Augustine was the Newport of the South at the turn of the 20th Century. It had two big hotels noted for their stone architecture. One is now a college and the other is a museum/city hall. I guess they needed a lot of souvenirs for the visitors circa 1900 and these steins fit the bill. After all, it was the golden age of steins. I was just over there in August and didn’t see any of these St. Augustine steins in the antique/flea shops.
