In September of 1972 Roland Henschen, writing in the Tri-State Trader, noted that several years earlier porcelain steins had begun turning up with the word METTLACH written in gold paint on the bottom. The bodies were all the same, but the decoration varied. Fortunately, in this case, any collector who has any familiarity with the wares produced by V&B at their Mettlach factory will have no trouble recognizing these steins for what they are - shabby attempts to mislead the unsuspecting. While it is entirely possible that the firm that made these steins actually produced them in the town of Mettlach - thereby giving the mark some technical legitimacy - there can be little doubt that it was hoped their product would be mistaken for that of the V&B factory. As to what the seller of this stein understands...?
