Immo,
The design looks the same to me. What is different is the lid and the coloring. Inlaid lids, such as in Gary's auction, were less expensive originally because of the high cost of pewter and the buyer could purchase different lids. Today's collector generally places a higher value on the inlaid lid. Thumblifts could vary also. Because these steins were made at various times and would have been made by different workers, it is not uncommon to find variations in the colors used. This is a common practice with other manufacturers too. It is possible to find some Mettlachs with variations in the design over a period of years. The Mettlach Book lists Warth as the designer of 1146, with his signature appearing on the stein. Mettlach quality would be hard to duplicate and I don't see anything in either picture to doubt they are both Mettlachs.
