The Mettlach Book, latest edition, shows two form 385s for two different student associations. These were handpainted, with one having decorative bands and the other having plain bands. It was possible to get different lids or to have another firm put on a lid, such as a silver lid. A silver lid would have been more expensive and desireable, perhaps reflecting the person's status or desire to make the gift more precious. It's possible you don't have a student association stein, but rather a stein with a family crest. You will need to post photos to get more help. You can try searching this site, http://www.geocities.com/wappenrolle/, for the crest, but it would help to have a family name.
