As Ron points out, Kirsner shows two Mettlach 385s side-by-side. The one to the left (which Kirsner refers to as "undecorated bands") does in fact display a student coat-of-arms, or Wappen. The one to the right ("decorated bands") shows civic or family arms, not student, in my opinion.

The first thing to determine here is whether your stein is like the one on the left (student) or the right (most probably civic). Having this exact stein (the one with the eagle) would be much more likely than finding an exact match for the student stein, since there were over 2000 variations of coats-of-arms used by these associations.

One thing that would help with this identification would be knowing what the words are on the banners on the side of the stein, and also what may be inscribed on the silver lid.
