Hi Dave,"Terra Sigilata" has been around since Roman times. The Samians used this so called name.It was red and white in color and earthenware.Centuries later ware was made from supposley medicial clays. In the 17th cent. it was again produced in Malta and Sriegau Silesia. Most of the steins of the 17th c. found in collections were made in Bohemia (Gabel) by Heinrich Wolf Berka. Dave, regarding the Creussen steins; they are fully Stoneware. I believe you are confusing them with Annaberg, which used a heavey dark slip to vitrify the body. It is thought that Creussen used the heavy slip to provide a nice ground for the enamel painting.Bob A.
