I'm not entirely certain what is meant by a "clay shrink", but suspect the person who suggested this meant what we might call a "firing line". That is a defect which looks like a crack, but arises during the cooling period (when the clay is shrinking). Since firing lines occur during manufacture such defects are still considered "mint" (i.e., "as made"), which points out one difficulty in the terminology which has come into common play.

That aside, I feel the area which your photo shows is actually damage, not a manufacturer's defect. It looks too irregular to be a firing line.

Buyers MAY ignore defects if they are minor and unobjectionable, but will not overlook damage, especially on higher-priced steins which can be found in perfect condition (with a little patience).
