You see these steins without the alligator head quite often. You can also find them with the alligator head repaired. Because of the cost of repair and the loss in value compared to a mint stein, even if repaired, the loss in value of your damaged stein is significant. A mint Mettlach 2373 sells in the $600 to $800 range. See Gary Kirsner's 06/02/02 auction catalog lot 308 that sold for $747.50. The same stein with a missing alligator head can be seen in his 05/14/01 catalog, lot 148. It had a range of $200 to $300 and sold for $229.43.
You can sell your stein through one of the stein auctioners, Gary Kirsner or Andre Ammelounx. Both are listed in the Links section of this site. Gary's site provides access to his recent auctions, including the ones I cited. The seller only realizes about 70% of the selling price. You could also list it on eBay. Prices will generally be lower due to eliminating the middle man and the factor of dealing with an unknown seller.
