I exhausted my search through 286 stein auction catalogs. I didn’t keep a tally, but I estimate that a Bohne Indian [½ L stein, ¼ L stein (this is not a reduced ½ L stein), match holder, cigarette holder and pipe] appears in about one out of every three or four catalogs. Every Bohne Indian had a white feather headdress. I believe the white was the intended color due to its contrast to the Indian’s black hair. The only Bohne stein that came in a different color version that I am aware of is the monkey, which comes in a white and a brown version. I have a black and white copy of an old Bohne catalog that shows the Indian (5228 and 4884/1) with a white headdress. On the other hand, however, the monkey (4781) is only shown in the brown version. (See Lot 164 in Gary Kirsner’s 09/20/00 auction for an example of the normal ½ L size Bohne Indian stein being discussed.) I am skeptical of your find being an original, since I don’t think a black on black color scheme would have been aesthetically pleasing.
Could it be possible that someone over painted the feathers in the new color scheme? You might try using a black light to see if it has been painted, though this might not work for newer paints. I am anxious to see pictures of your new find. Does the antique dealer have a web site that might show this stein?
