While cruising through eBay I came across a confusing item (928156199). It's listed as a Westerwald "quartern" circa 1650 and the seller adds a bit of back-up to somehow make it all "seem" real and true.
What bothers me is the missing "face" on the neck of the salt glazed piece(these faces are usually known as grotesques).
The seller says the piece has a "vestigial 'mask' in the form of a feathered blue ellipse, presumably a case of decoration being modified to take account of the retail price".
I had to look up the word "vestigial" and it says that the word means "a trace, mark, or visible sign left by something (as an ancient city or a condition or practice) vanished or lost". To me, the face looks like it never made it on to the neck in the first place.
So, instead of this being a secondary piece, he makes it sound as if the missing face were a way to be able to lower the retail price. I don't think so. The seller makes it all sound quite special. Just take a look at the price!
Personally, it seems that the Quality Control person at the pottery shop was asleep at the wheel or someone might have tucked it under their coat just to get this out of the factory in the first place.
I know I sound a bit jaded, but this description of the item seems wrong.
Can anyone tell me how to tell if this piece is truly that old? Why are the exposed clay portions of the body chips so "white"? Did somone "slip" up with the clay and forget to put on a face? How many folks use the word "vestigial" on a daily basis (just kidding on this question).
I look forward to other opinions on this.
