See the article 4F (Gymnastic) Steins in the Library section of this site. This is in remembrance of the German Gymnastic Festival at Breslau in 1894. The last line is probably "erinnerung" which means remembrance. I'm not sure about "on das VIII." You would need to post a picture, including any marks on the bottom, to help identify what you have. A stein would have a handle and attached lid, a handle with a hole but no lid would be a lidless stein, without a hole in the handle to attach a lid it is just a mug and no handle or lid could be a beaker.
