In reference to your letter of December 26:
Based on the information you have provided, I would say that the stein you describe is authentic to the period indicated. The reference to the German Gymnastic Society meeting in Breslau is authentic. The founder of the German Gymnastic Society, Friedrich Ludwig Jahn (1778-1852)was honored over the years beyond his life span. The term "Gut Heil!" (which I would translate as "Hail to Health!" was honored down through the decades, extending to the American Turner Society of the l9th Century and which still exists today in many of the major American cities. The reference to the Gymnastic Festival held in Breslau, the capital city of Silesia, a Prussian/German province southeast of Berlin, relates to an event which occured during the athletic events in l896. Breslau in located on the Oder river which flows northward into the Baltic Sea. The phrase "In Erinnerung an das VIII (Achte)" makes reference to an aquatic event on the river which involved an eight-man crew of a special rowboat which won the event. This stein was designed to commemorate that occasion. If possible, I would very much like to see a picture of this piece of German athletic achievement.
