Walt Vogdes edited an article on St. Louis Silver Company Steins in the June 1998 Prosit. Clarence M. Perkins of St. Louis received a patent for these wood and metallic vessels. Apparently the original patent model featured your particular stein. The firm apparently went out of business in 1912 or 1913. The wood is probably Flemish (golden) oak. The article also describes restoration of these steins. There is no mention about the 1904 Fair, but they may have been sold at the fair. Perhaps that is where your grandfather got it. If you don't have that issue of Prosit, perhaps Walt has an extra copy of the article.
