Dennis,

It sounds like you are describing a half yard of beer (or ale in the United Kingdom). The trick is to drink the half yard without spilling the contents in the bottom all over your face. If you finish it off like a regular glass, the contents in the bottom will come rushing out over your face. You need to tip it slowly to get the bottom contents in your mouth and not in your face.
