It is possible to search U.S. military records and sometimes find a good deal about a person, including date of birth, home town, next of kin, whether they earned medals, served in combat, lived to draw a pension or died in battle. I was hoping to find the same sort of information about the German soldiers whose names and units I have found on steins, trench art etc.Though I treasure these objects for their artistic and/or historic value, I also realize that they were once cherished belongings of someone who is almost certainly dead now, and that in some cases they may be practically the only tangible proof on earth that such a person once existed. I can't help wondering who they were & would like to find out something about them if possible. I know that much of this sort of information has been lost, but would be grateful if anyone could steer me in the right direction.
