Your stein has set its theme from the first line of a wel-known and beloved drinking song from the Rhineland.
the original German sentence is:
Es zogen drei Burschen wohl über den Rhein.
and then goes on to say,
Bei einer Frau Wirtin, da kehrten sie ein.
Three gallant young fellows crossed over the Rhine.
They stopped at an inn to drink some Rhine wine.
If you would like the text of the entire song, let me know, and I will send you a copy. The song is a favorite among students because they can relate to its story so well. Of course, the presence of the innkeeper's wife's lovely daughter does not detract their interest.
The English translation is not official, but is the way I would interpret it in rhyme. When I translate these phrases, I like to convey the spirit and the lilt of the words, and in so doing do take certain liberties which some purists may not wish to accept.
Let me know what you think. PROSIT!!!
