jdd6,

If your stein is like the one in the first set of pictures, it is a relief stein. The background is probably green. The initials "GK" are an unknown artist for the firm of Mathias Girmscheid of Höhr-Grenzhausen, Germany. This city is in the Westerwald area known as Kannenbackerland (land of the jug makers) due to rich clay deposits drawing a large number of potters to the area. A twisted vine handle is also a characteristic of the Girmscheid steins. There is speculation that the initials are those of either Gerhard Kunden or Gerhard Krieger. Does your stein have a manufacturer's mark or mold number on the bottom?
