I resently bought a copy of Antique Steins by James Stevenson copyright 1989. On page 177 there is a picture of Mettlach stein number 2204. I saw this same stein in an antique shop near my home with all of the marking and numbers on the bottom. This stein had a hairline crack that didn't look to bad, but I'm new at this and not sure how much it should affect the price. When I compared the image in the book to the image on the stein their were noticable differences. The eagle on the stein has no eye, also the tail feathers are now as intricate a pattern. The wording around the top of the stein, below the lid and above the handle is missing. The stein is priced at $425. Without asking, the counter help said the owner of this booth would take of 15%. I am very leery and have read about fakes and reproductions. Anyone how knows Mettlach's have any thoughts on this.
