Dana,

I doubt you were looking at a fake, but you are comparing apples and oranges. The stein in the Stevenson book is the 1,0 L size. The stein in the store is the 0,5 L size, which has no writing on the top rim and less deatail on the Prussian eagle. In mint condition, the 1,0 L size has a price range of $1,000 to $1,200 while the 0,5 L size has a price range of $600 to $750 (price estimates per The Beer Stein Library). A hairline can reduce the mint price by 25% to 50% or more, depending the location and extent of the hairline (per The Mettlach Book). Although repairs can be quite good and difficult to detect by the novice, they can be expensive and will not restore the stein to mint value. If you are interested in Mettlach, you should get The Mettlach Book by Gary Kirsner (see his web site in the Links section of this site).
