The previous thread questioned whether or not a stein was a fake Mettlach. If by fake you mean something similar to the fake Gucci purses that were popular at one time (to the untrained eye they had the appearance of the real thing), I don't think there are any fake Mettlachs. It would be too difficult and expensive to duplicate the Mettlach quality. However, there have been several steins appearing on eBay that have fake "Mettlach" names on them. These steins are generally like the reproduction regimentals, porcelain with a semi-nude lithophane and a bump in the handle. The printed word "Mettlach" is stamped in the bottom. I have also seen three etched steins with a realistic fake Mettlach mark in the bottom. The latest one is http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3203423161&category=3922. This is actually the Hauber & Reuther mold 419. Again, it appears someone has applied clay to the bottom and stamped in the Mettlach tower mark. However, the faker is not so clever as they gave it form number 2388. Mettlach form 2388 is actually a character stein of stacked pretzels. Caveat emptor! Another good reason to join SCI and become educated about antique steins.
