Hi, George, and welcome to the world of stein collecting. It sounds to me like your new collection contains older pieces (as contrasted to later 20th century steins). The six-sided star was used as the brewer's symbol, so in any context having to do with beer, it is represents beer or brewing or breweries or ... rather than the star of David. This particular symbol was used by the firm of Reinhold Merkelbach operating in the Westerwald village of Grenzhausen. The firm used that mark between 1882 and 1933. When you refer to a "picture impressed in the bottom of the cup" you are perhaps referring to a lithophane, an image formed by varying the thickness of the porcelain, visible when light passes through it. If you can send some photos there are lots of visitors to this forum who will help to identify these steins.
