The Mettlach Book states that the Probe mark was used after 1885, and that is probably the best we can do on a date. Sometimes these test products did not contain all the regular markings (such as form number and date). The Probe also could be decorated slightly different than the final product. Form 1977 does not appear in the Mettlach catalogs I have or in any of the Mettlach books I have. It could be that it never reached full production. I presume your Mettlach is etched rather than a PUG. The scene appears to be oriental. While a few of the plaques have an oriental flavor, I didn't see any with an oriental scene. You will have to be satisfied that you have a one of a kind circa 1900.
