Mark Durban wrote an interesting article for the June 1996 issue of Prosit entitled "The V & B Rosetta Stone". He describes an etched plaque which is only partially decorated, and unfinished areas are marked with numbers. He concluded that these numbers indicated slip colors, and that the "unfinished" plaque was actually a guide for the decorators of this plaque.
