Dana,
Most collectors do not want a stein that is not in mint condition, even if it is repaired. A good repaired stein would be better than an unrepaired stein. A defect that can not be seen would be better than one that can be seen. There are a lot of factors to consider when buying a stein. We have not seen the stein to determine if there may be other defects and if you are not comfortable knowing the condition of this stein, you would do well to pass. I have a feeling that you need to gain more information before investing much money in Mettlachs. It is difficult to find mint Mettlachs in antique shops. People that have Mettlachs to sell are aquainted with SCI and the three auction houses that specialize in steins.
The Mettlach Book states that a repaired hairline (1" to 2" in the body) will reduce the value 30 to 50%. It also states that short hairline in the body will cost $40 to $70 to repair (this book was printed in 1994). A recent article in our quarterly magazine Prosit has noted a decline in Mettlach prices over the last decade.
This stein is currently for sale on eBay at http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3206872574&category=3922. It says mint except for a stain on the inside. I would watch the price on this stein to see how it compares to the previous estimated values I gave you. I believe it will go lower than the low estimate I gave you, provided the reserve isn't higher. Prices generally are lower on eBay due to eliminating the middle man and due to the unknown factor of how accurate the description is. After reviewing all these factors, you can then make your decision.
If you are not already an SCI member, you would do well to join so you can begin to learn more about your interest in steins. Then attend the national convention and join and become active in a local chapter. The convention will expose you to a multitude of steins.
If this sounds confusing or complex, then you definitely should join SCI and become active. It is the only way to gain experience about your interest. And it will be a lot of fun too. I joined SCI shortly after its founding in 1965. There wasn't much information available on steins back then. Know one person can't remember, let alone digest, all the information that is available on steins.
Good luck and let us know what you do.
Ron
